3B Line Plots

How many pencils does each child have in his or her pencil box?  Today each child recorded this number on a sticky note and lined up in columns based on how many pencils they each had in their pencil box. They became a physical line plot as they learned about this new type of graph.  We then transferred this data  onto the white board with their sticky notes. Last we created an actual line plot using "x"s on a number line on the smart-board. By designing our lesson this way the children were taken through the 3 levels of understanding math: concrete, pictorial then abstract.
